Laparoscopic surgery presents a number of advantages to the patient over standard open surgery: • Smaller incision in the abdomen reducing post-operative pain • Faster recovery time due to the reduction in invasive abdominal access • More rapid mobilisation post-operatively, leading to a more rapid return to normal activity and employment • Reduced haemorrhage • Reduction in the “stress” of the operation leading to fewer respiratory and cardiovascular complications of the operation • More cosmetically acceptable sews
If performed by experienced surgeons with appropriate equipment, laparoscopic operations should be safer than traditional techniques. However, laparoscopic surgery is highly dependent upon technology and it is important that high quality imaging and instrumentation are available.
