Every year at Surgical Innovations, we nominate and select a local charity to support for the year ahead. Our staff chosen charity for 2023 was St. Gemma’s Hospice.
St Gemma’s Hospice is a Leeds-based charity providing expert care and support for local people with life-limiting and terminal illnesses. They offer care to patients, and their carers, in the Hospice’s In-Patient Unit, through the St Gemma’s community team and via Out-Patients.
St Gemma’s is the largest hospice in Yorkshire and one of the largest in the UK.
In the 2021/22 year, they supported over 3,000 local people, with 1,330 local people being referred to St Gemma’s Hospice care for the first time. Their team of specialist community nurses and doctors made 21,448 contacts with patients, either face to face or on the phone and they cared for 416 patients in the Hospice In-Patient Unit.
St Gemma’s Hospice has approximately 270 employees. Of those, 160 employees directly support patient care (such as nursing and medical teams, social workers, housekeepers and therapists).
St Gemma’s Hospice has a team of approximately 986 volunteers, working in a variety of roles supporting departments throughout the organisation including their charity shops placed all around Yorkshire!
It is clear their work is vital to our local community, and we are proud to support them this year.
So far, we have hosted a company-wide bake sale and a raffle with some fabulous prizes, donated by local businesses.
By far, our biggest fundraising event was the Total Warrior! Our team took on 15 obstacles, muddy puddles, ice plunges and assault courses across a 6km race. We raised over £1500, and our team had plenty of (muddy) laughs!
